postural problems

Improper or inefficient posture can be associated with back, neck, shoulder and hip pain. The spine has three natural curves,
one in the neck, one in the mid-back, and one in the lower back. It is important to maintain these curves so that the body can
optimally distribute natural forces throughout the spine, thus minimising tension. When an improper posture is maintained for
extended periods of time there is an increased risk for a detrimental cascade of events; stabilizing muscles can become weak
and fatigued, some muscle groups become over stretched while other muscle groups become shortened, ligaments and discs
(spongy, shock absorbing tissue between the bones of the spine) may also become irritated and inflamed, resulting in
back aches and stiffness and Postural Derangement and/or Dysfunction.

Platinum Physiotherapy can assist you in self-management techniques designed to combat the problem!

For Platinum Physiotherapy core stability or "achieving a strong powerhouse" has revolutionized the way we manage back pain.

  What actually is core stability?

Core stability refers to the ability of certain, specialized muscles to prevent uncontrolled and potentially injurious
movement of the low back, trunk or lumbar spine, thereby preventing stress on spinal structures such as disks, ligaments and
  facet joints.

It's important to have adequate core stability, so that the larger and stronger power/movement generating muscles have an
efficient and stable base to work from. Forces transferred up the legs or arms in various activities are also absorbed and
transferred in the trunk. If a strong powerhouse does not control these movements you are at increased risk of injuring your
back as well as injuring movement-generating muscles.

When we spend repeated, prolonged periods in poor posture or when we have significant active back pain these muscles can
become inhibited. They lose their memory and timing and their protective abilities can be delayed. Moreover, research has shown
that if the core stabilizers don't work well, the back can be predisposed to further or recurrent injury. It is therefore essential that
in the event of back pain or injury you are taught a self-manageable core stability strengthening program to provide the external
support that maintains posture and balance of your spine.
